Swimming Technical Officials

Welcome to the Swimming Technical Officials page

Swimming Technical Officials are volunteers who run the operational side of swimming competitions in the North District.

Training of Swimming Technical Officials takes place by our volunteer committee overseen by the North District Swimming Technical Officials Convenor.

Information below about forthcoming 2024/25 STO Training

(If you are an STO, or a Timekeeper working in the North District, one of the best ways of keeping in touch is to join the North District Technical Officials Group. If you are not already a member then pop your name in a reply and we will add you.)

STO Training Courses

Please see below the proposed dates for all Swimming Technical Official (STO) training courses the remainder of this year which was sent to all the North District Club STO Coordinators recently. If you have any questions then please get in touch with your Club STO Coordinator or the ND STO Convenor (Durno Jessiman).

Timekeeper (TK) Courses

TK courses can be run as an online zoom course followed by a poolside assessment at a later date or as a classroom course session followed directly by a poolside assessment whichever is preferable to your club. If you would like to become a Timekeeper then please get in touch with your Club STO Coordinator.

Judge Level 1 (J1) Courses

J1 course are run online and candidates can sign up for this course using the following link. https://www.swimming.org/ios/courses-officials-volunteers/ This link takes you directly into the Aquatics GB training site and will give you access to the latest J1 course. Please remember to upload the qualification to the Scottish Swimming link on the last page of the course.

Judge Level 2 (J2) Course

The J2 workshop 1 will be an online zoom course on the 3rd September 2024 at 7.30pm. Candidates should complete the application form which is available from your Club STO Coordinator. Durno will send out invitations and zoom links nearer the time. Candidates/clubs should pay the course fee of £10 directly to Scottish Swimming and send proof of payment to Durno prior to the course.

Judge Level 2 Starter (J2S) Course

The J2S workshop 1 will be an online course on the 5th September 2024 at 7.30pm. Candidates should complete the application form which is available from your Club STO Coordinator. Durno will send out invitations and zoom links nearer the time. Candidates/clubs should pay the course fee of £10 directly to Scottish Swimming and send proof of payment to Durno prior to the course.

Referee Training in 2025

Candidates wishing to apply for Referee training next year should send their application forms to Durno. Please make sure that you reach the required criteria before November 2024. The current application form is dated 2024 but applicants should complete the form and send it along with evidence that they have met the course requirements by the 15th November. Durno will pass on the relevant paperwork to Aquatics GB and ensure that those who meet the requirements are enrolled in the 2025 training programme. Details on payment for the course will be passed on after eligibility has been confirmed.

Recorders Training

Recorder training will continue in the new format. Candidates will need to complete a minimum of 6 mentoring sessions during 2025 with the final exam held in November 2025. To allow us to plan workshop dates and training at local meets please return the application form by November 15th.

 Technical Swimsuits Policy for Swimmers Aged 13 and Under

As of 1st September 2022, new regulations have come into force regarding technical swimsuits.

From this date all swimmers 13 years and younger cannot compete wearing technical suits in Scottish Swimming licensed or registered events.
